WHAT TO DO IN PONFERRADA – EL BIERZO (SPAIN)

Ponferrada, apart from being a crossing point on Camino de Santiago, it is a spectacular tourism destination in Spain because of its several beautiful places: the vineyards, the Ancares area, unique villages such as Balboa, the Roman mines of Las Médulas with its lunar landscapes, the Bierzo gastronomy…

Ponferrada: a Templar past

Thousands of pilgrims follow the route of the Apostle every year and pass through Ponferrada; they always go back home carrying the indelible image of the enormous Templar fortress that welcomes them upon their arrival in the city. In the heart of the Old Town, overlooking the Si River, the Ponferrada Castle rises; this was the main Templar bastion in the Spanish northwest area, and the cradle of mysteries of the Solomon Temple guardians which are still to be discovered.

On the first summer moon, the city celebrates its traditional Templar night, which consists on a recreation of the concealment of the treasures of the temple. Nearly a thousand people dressed as templars participate in it and later have dinner in the Castle under candle lights, on a magical night that brings us back to the Middle Ages.

Wineries and oenology: a unique personality

Bierzo wines are recognized as the great revelation of the wines in national and international markets. The regulatory council of Bierzo wines includes more than 77 wineries in 21 municipalities.

Gastronomy: protected quality

The excellence of the gastronomy in Bierzo area is given by two factors that make it unique: the great richness of its orchards and fruit trees, and the character of its wines, made with the local grape varieties Modelo and Mencía.

Nature: intense emotions

Diaphanous rivers, almost virgin paths, among oaks, chestnuts, holly or beech that become multi-coloured in autumn; mountains furrowed by paths that lead to small monasteries and hermitages; the immense beauty of places like Las Médulas, a World Heritage Site; or Ancares, declared a Biosphere Reserve.

Monasteries and castles: travelling back to Middle Ages

The human presence in Bierzo dates to the origin of time. The several civilizations that conquered the region left a very rich legacy that grew even more with the strong influence of Camino De Santiago. Witnesses to it are its castles, churches, monasteries and hermitages.

Great Medieval Villas: the legacy of a culture

Camino de Santiago crosses the Bierzo area from east to west for 70 kilometres. Throughout this very interesting stage you will be able to visit the villas that were born as a result of medieval pilgrimages and therefore achieved a splendour that still shines nowadays, such as Ponferrada, Villafranca del Bierzo or Cacabelos.
